triciawang: journalism content reflects structural racism. 360 words = 1 person shot in white hood = 370 words. 23 words = 4 people shot in black hood.
“This image of an article from Monday’s (March 4) edition of RedEye has been passed around by many on social media. It highlights a condensed article about overnight violence in Chicago, including a shooting in West Rogers Park and shootings in the Back of the Yards, Englewood, Gage Park and New City neighborhoods.
We hear you.
The online conversation that’s developing around this story is an important one. Thank you for the comments and feedback. This is incredibly important to us, especially as we set out to shine a light on Chicago violence this year. Conversations like these will continue to inform and improve our coverage. The article in question is from the Chicago Tribune and can be found in full here.
…Booo to RedEye’s original article, plus I’m really surprised they made a response.
On September 28th, I posted the photo on my left to my Instagram. It was my last night in my Logan Blvd Chicago apartment. The next day, I put everything I own in storage and slept on couches in preparation for my new life and career. I’ve “sacrificed” living without my things (which are just that — things) for nearly five months. And tonight, the image on the right, is my last night sleeping on a non-bed (I’ve been on an air mattress in my new house for a week). Tomorrow morning, the moving company arrives and my life will somewhat be back in order again. To every person who has given me a sofa to sleep on, an extra bedroom, a meal, a coffee, and everything in between — thank you. Sincerely.
Having a conversation with Lauren about our old apartment in Chicago and feeling really nostalgic about all of the good times we all had there. It makes me sad to think that we can’t go back to that time frame/mentality.
In other news, I got my house and I’m moving in next week. New memories and a new life.
